Alchemy, its mysteries, and the quest for the Philosopher's Stone have been a strand in the development of European culture from antiquity onwards. By the seventeenth century the complex pictorial language of alchemical symbols had reached a high point of elaboration and beauty. With the spread of printing, the whole fantastic iconography flowered as never before. This magnificent book presents a selection of the finest alchemical engravings, brought together for the first time. The best engravers of the age--the De Bry family, Merian, De Hooghe, and others--worked to interpret the haunting emblems of Lambsprinck and Michael Maier, the profundities of the wordless Mutus Liber, or the Christian mysticism of Jacob Bohme. In his introduction and commentaries, the author investigates the origins of this visual tradition. He interprets the symbols, and provides information on authors, publishers, patrons, and engravers.

Stanislas Klossowski de Rola

A true son of Hermes, Prince Stanislas Klossowski de Rola (Baron de Watteville) inspired a reevaluation of the alchemical tradition with his two books, Alchemy: The Secret Art (1973) and The Golden Game (1988). Son of Balthus, the renowned Polish-French aristocrat and artist, Stanislas is a man of unique extraction and influence. A close personal friend to Eugène Canseliet, he more famously befriended The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in the 1960s. Klossowski de Rola also gained popular attention for his dandyist æsthetic. He later lived for many years in Sri Lanka and presently resides in the Castle of Montecalvello, Italy.

We ship all International orders via Priority Post.
Shipping discounts available on combined orders!
Needless to say, prices are subject to change without notice.

We strive to ensure quality and satisfaction with every book sold.
Your privacy is very important to us!
We ship our items discreetly with no occult references on the package.
To view our Return Policy, Privacy Policy and/or Terms and Conditions, click here.
