The Nine Plants Spell, often referred to as the Nine Herbs Charm or even Nigon Wyrta Galdor, is an enigmatic, animistic, and vividly colorful Old English spell recorded on a single manuscript from Anglo-Saxon England (the Lacnunga). Invoking the pagan god Wōden (Odin) to lead a war band of nine female plants, there is nothing else quite like it anywhere.
Join folklorist Joseph S. Hopkins at Dark Star Magick for an intimate reading of his translation of the spell, published by Olympia-based Hyldyr and appearing in theaters across the planet in Chloé Zhao’s upcoming film Hamnet.
Hopkins will be discussing related spells (such as the historical phenomenon of related continental Germanic wyrm spells), the matter of Anglo-Saxon paganism and the Christianization of Germanic-speaking Europe, and much more. He will also be signing editions he has authored available on-site.
