Aradia: Gospel of the Witches by Charles Godfrey Leland is a classic and influential occult classic.
In 1899, Charles Godfrey Leland, folklorist by profession, compiled a short book composed of ceremonies and rites to Diana employed by local witches in Tuscany, Italy. He received these rituals from a woman named Maddalena, who was well-versed in Italian Witchcraft (Stregha).
Split into two-parts, English and Italian, it comprises the tale of the goddess Aradia, who came to the aid of the poor folk in the region in order to overcome the treachery of the Roman Catholic Church and the cruel and dishonest acts of their feudal landowners.
Although not an extensive history or anthropological research into the symbolism and overall progression of Italian Witchcraft, it has become a huge influence on Witchcraft in the West, and helped pave the way for the modern Wicca movement, heralded by Gerald Gardner in the twentieth-century. The hymns and rites to Diana provide simple and concise instructions that do not entail some of the drudgery found in other occult rituals.
