Evolution is a two-volume collection of poetry and art of renowned occultist Austin Osman Spare by Stephen Pochin.
In Evolution, Volume One: From Influx to Automatic Drawing, the author looks at Spare in the context of his interaction with contemporary poets, and examines the interaction between word and visual art in his own early work. He follows Spare’s abandonment of the cosmopolitan life of London’s bohemia, and his withdrawal to South London, and immersion in his occult studies. In the course he presents a number of fresh perspectives on Spare’s life and influences.
In Evolution, Volume Two: A Fearful Asymmetry, Stephen Pochin scrutinizes Spare’s bookplate designs, their historical and artistic background, and what they tell us of Spare’s relationship with his various patrons, and his and their own preoccupations.
These volumes are extremely scarce; Volume One being limited to only 250 copies and Volume Two only 300. These editions sold out immediately upon release and are very hard to find.
