Description

Originally published as ‘The Problems of Mysticism and its Symbolism’ in 1917, Hidden Symbolism of Alchemy and the Occult Arts begins with Dr. Herbert Silberer taking the first steps on his adventure through the mind. As part of the inner-circle of psychoanalysts that included Freud and C.G. Jung, Silberer takes a psychoanalyst’s view through the world of dreams, introspection and metaphysics, primarily through the lens of Freudian analysis.

Divided in three parts (Parable, Analytical and Synthetic), Silberer attempts to reconcile the philosophies of Hermeticism, Alchemy and general occultism with Freudian concepts. As confidence in his analysis slips further away, he realizes its futility in spiritual matters, as it does not make room for dream interpretation and many other metaphysical views upon the inner-nature of the unconscious.

Using an old alchemical text known as the Paradox Allegory, Silberer makes an effort to harmonize all spiritual and metaphysical philosophies…from The Chemical Wedding of Christian Rosencreutz and the Bhagavad Gita, to his growing personal perspective on the occult arts.

Throughout this wonderful analysis of the self and the unconscious, Dr. Herbert Silberer transforms from a mere psychoanalyst, to the actual subject of his studies. In the section entitled The Goal of the Work, we see our good doctor traveling further and further into his own Enlightenment.
