Description
Secret Societies of the Middle-Ages: An Exploration of the Assassins, Knights Templar and the Secret Tribunals of Westphalia by Thomas Keightley was originally written in 1837.
Split into three parts (Assassins, Templars and Westphalia), Secret Societies of the Middle-Ages explores the influences of these groups surrounding medieval Europe and the Middle East. Although differing greatly in philosophies and ambitions, these three organizations embedded themselves deeply into the power-structures that were once above them, causing disruption and shaking the foundations of their geographical locales.
The Assassins, known for their brutality and murder of those within positions of power, were a Muslim organization bent on spreading the word of Mohammad, by any means necessary.
The Knights Templar, holy crusaders who created the first banking-system and became wealthy beyond their wildest dreams, eventually met their end in a most horrible manner. And finally, the secret tribunes of Westphalia in Germany, a legal entity created to curb street-violence and other forms of treachery, which in turn became the most feared entity in the country.
The actions of these groups changed the face of the world, and carved a blueprint for many secret societies in the future to follow. Filled with intrigue, murder, corruption and, at times, religiosity, their influence is as incalculable as the stars in the night-sky.
