Description
This leather bound volume is a facsimile of the 1665 edition of Reginald Scot’s The Discovery of Witchcraft. The book was intended as an exposé of early modern witchcraft. It contains a small section intended to show how the public was fooled by charlatans, which is considered the first published material on illusionary or stage magic.
Scot believed that the prosecution of those accused of witchcraft was irrational and not Christian, and he held the Roman Church responsible. Popular belief held that all obtainable copies were burned on the accession of James I in 1603.
The Discovery of Witchcraft quotes heavily and accurately from several existing grimoires of the time, so much so that Scot’s book was often used as a grimoire itself! This volume is an exact copy of the 1665 London printing. It is bound in full leather with ribbed spine, with blind embossing, gold gilded pages and stamping on covers and spine, marbled endpapers, and red ribbon.
