Description
The Grand Grimoire, also known as Le Dragon Rouge or The Red Dragon, is a notorious goetic grimoire associated with black magic. It is believed to have been written around 1521, 1522, or 1421, although Owen Davies suggests that the first edition might have been created around 1702. The grimoire is considered a counterfeit by some, including the 19th-century French occultist Éliphas Lévi, who thought the contemporary edition of Le Dragon Rouge was not based on a true, older Grand Grimoire. The introductory chapter of the Grand Grimoire was purportedly written by Antonio Venitiana del Rabina, claiming to have compiled his information from the original writings of King Solomon. The content of the Grand Grimoire heavily draws from the Key of Solomon and the Lesser Key of Solomon, which are pseudonymous works attributed to King Solomon. The primary purpose of the Grand Grimoire is to instruct readers on how to summon Lucifer or Lucifuge Rofocale for the purpose of striking a pact with the Devil.
The Grand Grimoire is infamous for its instructions on summoning a demon named Lucifuge Rofocale, who is described as a high-ranking official in charge of Lucifer’s hell. Despite claims that the full text is stored in the Vatican’s archives, the copies available to the public are excerpts. These texts contain a variety of spells and practices, including communication with spirits, divination, and even recipes for creating substances like glue. The grimoire is noted for its inclusion of bizarre rituals, such as boiling a black cat or writing one’s name in blood, alongside more traditional magical practices. It is also rich in Latin, adding to its historical and linguistic appeal.
Historically, the Grand Grimoire has been linked to the era of King Solomon and is rumored to have been written in either Biblical Hebrew or Aramaic, enhancing its perceived potency. It is divided into four parts and is said to be kept in the Vatican Secret Archives. The grimoire includes detailed accounts of rituals for summoning demons, including the use of a Blasting Rod and specific items like a stone called Ematille and blessed candles to form a protective triangle. The Grand Grimoire is particularly notable for its instructions on making pacts with the Devil, which involve complex rituals and offerings.
