Description

Worship of the Serpent, written by John Bathurst Deane in 1830, is considered one of the most erudite and scholarly histories yet written regarding the influence of the serpent on religious thought. For millennia individuals have contemplated how we, as a collective species, came through disgrace through the calculating actions of a limbless reptile? Why has the serpent been the constant companion of those who seek to know the relation betwixt ourselves and the world we reside in? What qualities make it the most respected and intelligent creatures in one culture, and an evil and cunning abomination in another?

Throughout the ages and cutting through cultural boundaries, those “in touch” with the higher-planes of consciousness, have formed strikingly similar ideas on the metaphysical natures of snakes, and serpents in general. Regarded almost exclusively as the Bearers of Wisdom, they have found a meaningful (but not always respectable) existence in nearly all religions, since the histories of mankind were first recorded for posterity.

In what can only be described as obsessive research and study, Rev. John Bathurst Deane has traced the mystic history of this Bearer of Wisdom, not only through Genesis in the Old Testament, but also throughout China, the Americas, ancient Persia and Europe. Connecting these varied mythologies is the serpent’s willingness to impart Knowledge to its subjects almost with a hidden grin, as though giving fire to Man.
