Description

La Sorcière: The Witch of the Middle Ages (titled ‘Satanism and Witchcraft’ in some editions) by Jules Michelet is a largely sympathetic history of witchcraft in medieval England and France. Although not as historically accurate as other works on the subject of witchcraft, it is nonetheless one of the first to be written with any kind of objectiveness. Whereas most historians concentrate on evil, superstition and the more negative aspects of this part of paganism, Michelet attempts to paint witchcraft with a broader brush, explaining its growth among the peasantry as a revolt against the Church.

La Sorcière: Witchcraft in the Middle-Ages has become one of the cornerstone classics among the modern Wicca movement, along with Aradia: Gospel of the Witches, for its mostly positive views of witchcraft.
