Description
This first Weiser edition of Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot deck was published in conjunction with Llewellyn in 1973 – who simultaneously produced several printings under their own imprint. It followed the first color printing of the full Thoth deck by Llewellyn in 1972 (not 1969, as is commonly but erroneously thought) and was published with the collaboration of Grady McMurtry (then Caliph of the O.T.O), Lee Heflin, and Gerald Yorke. The first / early printings of the Weiser “White Box B” are distinguishable as they carry over two errors from the original Llewellyn “White Box A” printing: the “Eight of Cups” is lacking the numeral that is normally stamped in the upper margin, and the image on the “Ace of Disks” is printed upside down (these errors were corrected in later printings). Unlike later printings this edition was not accompanied by an explanatory booklet. It typically did have a separate card with a short explanatory text and the contact details for Hymenaeus Alpha – Grady L. McMurtry (the “Caliph Card”). This Thoth deck does not have the “Caliph Card.” It has come direct from the original purchaser, a customer of ours for over 40 years, who is adamant that it did not come with a “Caliph Card.” Whether this was an accidental omission by the printers, or some early sets were released without it, is not known.

These cards are in Acceptable condition. The box shows wear and the cards have a slight warp and some water marking, but is still a usable deck.
